MÁXIMO MENDIETA Y EL OCEAN : COMERCIO GLOBAL EN TIEMPOS DE TRANSICIÓN (1828-1832)

Abstract

Through a counterpoint between microhistory and global history, the round expedition of the Brigantine Ocean between 1828 and 1832, from Valparaíso/Callao to Manila/Canton, is analyzed. Unpublished judicial documents are studied, derived from the lawsuit between Maximo Mendieta and the commercial houses of Alsop and ca. And Dent and co, to explain the insertion process of Chile in the global Pacific market, in times of re-articulation of the connections and renewal of the agents involved in the trans-Pacific trade. Finally, the strategies carried out by Maximo Mendieta, a Spanish merchant linked to the Real Compañía de Filipinas, to maintain his leading role in an adverse global context are analyzed.
