LAS REVISTAS Y LA INSTITUCIONALIZACIÓN DE UN NUEVO CAMPO CIENTÍFICO. EL CASO DEL BOLETÍN DEL INSTITUTO OCEANOGRÁFICO DE VENEZUELA (1961-1979)

Abstract

In 1961, the first issue of the Boletín del Instituto Oceanográfico de Venezuela was published; this was the first scientific journal that appeared in Venezuela exclusively dedicated to Oceanography. The relevance of Boletín lies not only in this, but also in the fact that it was part of the development of the Instituto Oceanográfico de Venezuela (IOV) and the institutionalization of Marine Sciences in the country. The new scientific field in Venezuela began to articulate itself around the Institute itself and by communicating the results of its research through a periodical publication such as the Bulletin, the practitioners of the field themselves, mostly belonging to the nascent IOV, sought to become the spokespersons of a particular academic community. By examining the Bulletin during the period 1961-1979, apart from the data on the number of papers published, we can learn about the main authors and the topics of study, which constituted elements of the creation of the Marine Sciences in Venezuela.
