Recepción del impacto del gato doméstico sobre la fauna silvestre, una evaluación en a comuna de Yumbel, Chile

Abstract

El gato doméstico, al ser considerado una especie exótica invasora, amenaza a la fauna silvestre, siendo la predación uno de sus mayores impactos, principalmente debido a la irresponsable tenencia de mascotas. Existen antecedentes del impacto que ha generado el gato doméstico a nivel mundial, y en Chile hay diversos estudios que señalan que nuestro país no está exento de este impacto en la fauna silvestre. Sin embargo, en la comuna de Yumbel no existen antecedentes sobre el tema, lo que la hace atractiva de evaluar. El presente estudio evaluó el impacto del gato sobre la fauna silvestre mediante la percepción de los dueños de gatos, realizándose una encuesta presencial a un total de 213 personas que tenían gatos y habitaban en la comuna ya señalada, siendo la información evaluada mediante un análisis descriptivo. Se evaluó y caracterizó las especies predadas, siendo las aves principalmente el grupo más afectado. Se evaluó el conocimiento de la Ley de tenencia responsable, donde un 83% de los encuestados conoce la ley, pero de los gatos reportados, un 75% no está con vacunas al día y un 70% no está con desparasitaciones al día, indicando una falta de tenencia responsable. Por otro lado, se evaluaron comportamientos que permiten el acercamiento del gato doméstico a la fauna silvestre, detectándose que los gatos se mueven cercas de sus casas y aun así generan impactos en la fauna silvestre.

The domestic cat, being considered an invasive exotic species, threatens wildlife, with predation being one of its greatest impacts, mainly due to irresponsible pet ownership.There are antecedents of the impact that the domestic cat has generated worldwide, and in Chile there are various studies that indicate that our country is not exempt from this impact on wildlife. However, in the commune of Yumbel there is no precedent on the subject, which makes it attractive to evaluate. The present study evaluated the impact of cats on wildlife through the perception of cat owners, by means an in-person-survey of a total of 213 people who lived in the aforementioned commune, being the information evaluated through a descriptive analysis. Predated species were evaluated and characterized, with birds mainly being the most affected group. It was evaluated the knowledge of the Responsible Ownership Law. Although 83% of surveyed cat owners knowned the law, 75% of the cats reported did not have up-to-date vaccinations and 70% did not have up-to-date deworming, indicating a lack of responsible ownership. On the other hand, behaviors that allow the domestic cat to approach wildlife were evaluated, detecting that cats moves near their homes and still generate impacts on wildlife.
